I had such a wonderful time last week having a Nou I had such a wonderful time last week having a Nourishing Dance discussion with these lovely students in the ABT/NYU Master’s Degree cohort. We delved into several of the topics from my 📖 like the impact of diet and dance culture on dancer’s health and well-being and how we can help dancers better cope with challenging environments WHILE ALSO working to to make dance settings healthier and safer.

Huge thanks 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻to @pamela.s.levy for inviting me and organizing the event and to all who participated. Such a great conversation and questions! Teaching teachers (and especially the future generation of dance educators/staff) is one of my favorite things to do. Together, we can build a better dance world! 🩰🌎❤️🌱

Almost every dancer will experience injury at some Almost every dancer will experience injury at some point during their training and/or career. While there is much work to be done to address factors in the dance world that increase risk of injury (eg, under-fueling, disordered eating, insufficient rest/recovery time), we also want dancers to be well-equipped to best care for themselves when an injury does occur. And everyone who trains or cares for dancers needs to know how to support them through what is often a difficult time.

Injuries generally don’t just impact an isolated body part; they affect the whole dancer, and recovery needs to focus on the whole dancer too. Here are a few essential ingredients for recovery (I wish these had all been addressed though my MANY injuries as a dancer😢):

🥛Nutrition to support health & healing

🛌🏻Adequate rest & sleep

💉Medical care

🏋🏻‍♀️Physical therapy and other therapies to support the rehab process

🧑🏾‍🤝‍🧑🏽Social support from friends, family, peers; professional support from a dietitian and psychotherapist; and support from dance teachers, staff, and leadership

🧠Addressing how injury affects mental health (and vice versa)
